Anna University is one of the reputed universities of India, which is known for its significant contributions in the field of science and technology. The main campus is situated in the southern part of Chennai next to the banks of Adyar River and extends over a wide range of 189 acres. The university commenced in the year 1978, by integrating four well known technical institutions in Chennai namely, College of Engineering (CEG), Alagappa College of Technology(ACT), School of Architecture(SAP) and Madras Institute of Technology(MIT). In 2001, the university was converted into affiliating university by bringing all the engineering colleges under a single roof. Currently, in addition to the 4 university campuses (CEG/ACT/MIT/SAP), the university has 3 regional campuses, 13 constitutional colleges and around 600 affiliated colleges.
The university provides higher education in different fields like Engineering, Architecture, Technology and Applied sciences. It offers 29 UG and 90 PG programmes in the University Departments and 41 UG and 57 PG programmes in affiliated colleges. About 16,000 students are being educated in the university departments alone and still counting. It is also estimated that the university has around 14500 PhD scholars enrolled in the various research fields of science and technology.
The university has received various recognitions like “University with Potential for Excellence” (UPE) for its expertise in biomedical field, crystal growth centre as a national facility and others. The university has been ranked 7th in the university category, 9th in the engineering category and 14th in the overall category in 2019-20 as per National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and also acquires respectable ranking in QS World University Rankings each year. As per Albert Einstein’s words, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”, the university’s vision has always been to provide quality education to the young aspiring minds and make them grow as successful professionals with in depth knowledge in the course and ethical values. It has been successful in its endeavour of providing the right form of education for the past 41 years and has produced some of the great intellectual minds in the society.
